Multi-Generations Living Together in Baton Rouge | Home Instead

Multi-generational living in Baton Rouge, LA.  It means that Dad has taken over the guest room and the kids are sharing a bathroom!

And, according to reports from the 2010 U.S. Census and a study by the Pew Research Center, more Americans are sharing a multi-generational home than ever before.  Approximately 1 in 6 Americans live in a household with multiple generations — 30 percent more than reported in 2000.

In addition to the uncertainty of today’s economy,  seniors report that they opt for at-home care for the following reasons:

1.  Shared caregiving duties

2.  Physical and emotional support offered by the extended family.

3.  Financial security

From the family caregiver’s perspective, the following reasons for asking Mom or Dad to move in with the family are recounted:

1.  Adult children believe that their own home is the best place to provide the best possible care for their parents.

2.  Family caregivers find the hands-on care of their loved one to be a rewarding experience.

3.  Family caregivers find a sense of accomplishment in providing care for a loved one.

4.  Families report that closer relationships are established in a multi-generational household.
