If you’re new to the idea of considering bringing in extra help for your loved one who needs more assistance than you can give, you’re no doubt overwhelmed with considering your options for senior caregiver services, as well as the costs that are involved with these. Today I’m bringing to you some basic information on the different types of elder care, as well as the average cost in the greater Baton Rouge area for such care, based on the MetLife 2011 Market Survey of Long-Term Care Costs.
What is an assisted living facility?
Assisted living can mean different things based on the particular residence. As a general rule however, in an assisted living community your loved one will have independence and you’ll have the peace of mind that personal care services are available if needed. The community will be designed with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, etc. in mind for the residents. Generally meals are provided as well as assistance with housekeeping and laundry.
Assisted living in Baton Rouge averages around $70 to $120 per day, depending on the location and services provided.
What is an adult day care center?
Designed to provide care and socialization for older ones who need assistance or supervision during the day, adult day care centers offer support for caregivers so they have the freedom to work, care for personal business or have much-needed personal time. Adult day care centers provide alternative care and work on enhancing self-esteem and encouraging socialization for seniors.
In Baton Rouge, adult day care costs average between $45 and $65 daily.
What does a home caregiver do?
A home caregiver can and will do many things, but the central idea is assisting your loved one with activities of daily living. These include, but are not necessarily limited to: bathing, dressing, grooming and hygiene, fall prevention and monitoring, housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, shopping, companionship and transportation. Home caregivers are generally paid per hour, and in Baton Rouge, these rates average from $13 to $16. Rates do vary significantly based on experience and education.
What is a nursing home?
A nursing home provides long-term care to those who are chronically ill or injured, and are unable to care for themselves independently. Nursing homes, while able to provide medical care, also focuses on activities and socialization for their patients while under the supervision and care of trained caregivers and nurses.
The costs for care at a Nursing home varies in Louisiana from around $70 per day to $136 for a semi-private room, and $120-141 for a private room.
Cost is almost always a factor in deciding what type of senior caregiver services will work for your family. While none of the above options are inexpensive, the costs can be well worth it if your loved one is happy, and in capable, kind hands.
